Manchester United and Chelsea both recorded victories in their respective fixtures yesterday night. United beat Wigan 1-0 in the league, but there was some bad news for fans of the Red Devils after goal scorer Wayne Rooney suffered a hamstring injury which is expected to keep him out for at least three weeks.
Adam Barrett put Southend United ahead in their FA Cup replay against Chelsea, but the Blues clawed their way back into the game, and eventually won it 4-1. Frank Lampard, Michael Ballack, Salomon Kalou and Nicolas Anelka all scored for Chelsea, who had been outclassed by Manchester United last weekend.
Newcastle United were knocked out of the FA Cup by Phil Brown’s Hull City, with Daniel Cousin scoring the winning goal for the Tigers with ten minutes to go on the clock.

Manchester United cruised to a 3-0 win over Southampton, but Aston Villa needed two James Milner goals to beat a stubborn Gillingham 2-1 in yesterday evening’s FA Cup ties.
The draw for the fourth round has also been made. Liverpool and Everton are paired together for what promises to be another exciting Merseyside derby, while United will welcome Tottenham Hotspur to Old Trafford. Nottingham Forest, who eliminated Manchester City in the previous round, will play Derby County. Hartlepool’s reward for a shock win over Stoke is a game against Gianfranco Zola’s West Ham. Last year’s runners up Cardiff City will host Arsenal, while winners Portsmouth could face non league Histon should they beat Bristol City and the Stutes get past Swansea.
