With most of the movement centred around England, rest of Europe quietly went about its business. Zenit St. Petersberg’s Andrei Arshavin completed all the necessary paperwork for a 12 million pound move to the Emirates stadium. But the paperwork is yet to be approved by the English FA and it remains to be seen if he would play in the Premier League for the rest of the season. Another Zenit midfielder Anatoliy Tymoschuk signed for Bayern Munich for around £12.5m. Tymoschuk captained Zenit during their UEFA Cup triumph.

Inter Milan were in talks with Tottenham Hotspur over a possible swap deal. Inter wanted Jermaine Jenas with Ricardo Quaresma going the other way. But Chelsea hijacked Quaresma’s move and Scolari signed him on loan till the end of the season. Sporting Lisbon rejected 3 bids on deadline day for Miguel Veloso – two from Bolton and one from Newcastle. Benfica defender Marco Zoro rejected the chance to join Bolton or Blackburn, signing of Vitoria Setubal instead.

Javier Saviola and Kevin Kuryani were heavily linked with moves to the Merseyside. Saviola was targeted by Liverpool as Keane’s replacement while Everton wanted Kuryani to solve their attacking problems. Both deals, though, fell through. Lyon’s Brazilian hit man Fred refused a deal to join Brazilian club Palmerias deciding to stay in France instead. Le Havre 20 year old midfielder Selim Bouadia joined PSG on loan. Meanwhile, AC Milan are seriously looking into the possibility to sign David Beckham on a permanent deal after his loan period expires. Beckham is also very eager to play in Europe as it would enhance his chances for an England call-up.
