De Gea was signed from Atletico Madrid for £18.3m last summer as a replacement for van der Sar, who retired after six years at Old Trafford.

Manchester United are trying to land Shinji Kagawa but Borussia Dortmund are playing hardball over the fee.

United have already held talks with Kagawa, who described his meeting with Sir Alex Ferguson as "positive".

Dortmund are prepared to let the Japan international leave after being told he does not want to sign a new contract with the German champions.

But, with his existing deal expiring in 2013, the Bundesliga champions want the best price and will not let him leave on the cheap.

Bayern Munich plan to get over their Champions League nightmare by making a move for Javi Martinez - the Athletic Bilbao star on Manchester United and Barcelona's radar.

Munich lost to Chelsea on penalties as they suffered Champions League despair on Saturday and the club are set to enter the market this summer.

They've already snapped up United target Xherdan Shaqiri, who will sign in July, and now they are keen on Martinez.
