Ipswich Town and Nottingham Forest are set to go head to head for the signature of Stoke City’s Danny Collins. The Welsh defender has been left out of Stoke’s 25 man Premier League squad and has been given the go ahead by Tony Pulis to get some first team football under his belt.

Which one of Forest or Ipswich lands Collins might well depend on which club is prepared to stump up the defenders £25,000-a-week wages. At this moment, Forest look the favourites, with Steve McClaren looking to bolster his defence at the City Ground.

Swansea inch closer to competing Routledge transfer

Swansea City are close to completing the signing of Wayne Routledge after agreeing a fee with Newcastle United for the winger’s services. The Swans and the Magpies have reportedly reached an agreement for £1.5m and the Welsh club are expected to officially announce Routledge’s transfer after he undergoes a medical tomorrow.

Routledge joined Newcastle from Queens Park Rangers in early 2010 but has struggled to hold down a regular spot at St.James’ Park. He spent the latter half of the 10/11 season on loan at QPR.

Birmingham City, Leicester City and Nottingham Forest were also interested in Routledge’s services but the winger seems poised for a move to Premier League newboys Swansea instead of a switch to a Championship club.

Wolves complete Hammill signing

Wolves have completed the signing of Barnsley winger Adam Hammill for a fee reported to be around £500,000. The 22-year old who began his career as a trainee with Liverpool signed a three and a half year deal with the Molineux club. Wolves pipped West Ham, Blackpool and Nottingham Forest for Hammill’s signature. He could make his Wolves debut against Liverpool on Saturday.

In his 60 appearances for Barnsley, Hammill has managed to net 12 goals. He has been their top performer this season with eight goals to his name. As a Liverpool player, Hammill played on loan to Dunfermline, Blackpool and Southampton.

The signing of Hammill has cast fresh doubts over ht future of Matt Jarvis. Jarvis has been in scintillating form for Wolves this season and is coveted by the likes of Everton and Liverpool. Jarvis is one of England’s rising stars is soon expected to break into the national side. Only time will tell if Hammill has been signed as Jarvis’ replacement or as his understudy.

Hartlepool and Nottingham Forest were undoubtedly the stars of the day, dumping Stoke and Manchester City respectively out of the competition. Liverpool were taken the distance by Preston North End, but eventually proved to be too much for PNE, and ran out 2-0 winners. Arsenal beat Plymouth 3-1, but Chelsea were held to a 1-1 draw by Southend. Central defender Peter Clarke headed home the equaliser for the Shrimpers in the 90^th minute. Peterborough earned a third round replay with a battling 1-1 draw against West Bromwich Albion, but Forest Green’s dreams were shattered as Derby fought their way back to win 4-3. Torquay upset Blackpool 1-0 at Plainmoor, with Matt Green scoring the only goal of the game.
